Digital Democracy
Gender Based Violence Hackathon

November 2012 – February 2013
Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Digital Democracy’s mission is to empower marginalized communities to use technology to defend their rights.

The Gender-Based Violence Hackathon brought together staff of the gender-based violence call center, students of the local technical college, and international mentors to spec and begin building a reference database. The connections made at the event continued in the implementation and maintenance of the database which is used to this day.

Role

Worked with Digital Democracy, who had been connecting locally over time, to consider what a short-term technical event would look like. Consulted on the program design to bring together technical local students, staff at the call center, and an international team of agile developers and designers over a weekend with limited engagement before and after the event. Facilitated those from these various backgrounds to work together smoothly. By the end of the event, students and call center staff were leading presentations. The call center still uses (and has further built upon by hiring students) the work we did at this event.
