Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre
Forecast-based Financing
December 2015 – March 2016
The Climate Centre is a specialist reference centre of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The Climate Centre’s mission is to help the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and its partners reduce the impacts of climate change and extreme-weather events on vulnerable people, which it often does through technology, art, and games.
One of these games, Paying for Prediction, was played across the engagement spectrum from frontline communities to official responders to funders of programs, generating a change of rules was suggested on every front. This is now called Forecast Based Financing. This rule change means instead of always reacting to extreme events after they happen, funding should be made available based on forecasts, which allow us to take more precise action in advance of a likely extreme event. This would diminish both suffering and costs, while also increasing organizational effectiveness.
Role
Worked with members of the Climate Centre team to generate a narration script and visuals to concisely express the ideas behind Forecast-based Financing for a broader audience. Delivered collateral as modular components for easy adaptation and translation as the idea evolves over time and is distributed to more countries.
