Department of Defense
Disaster Preparedness Exchange
September 2016
Camp Atterbury, IN
The Department of Defense is the executive branch department of the US federal government that coordinates all agencies concerned directly with national security.
This event was co-sponsored by the DOD and the Indiana National Guard.
Role
Attended a workshop about how the military, private sector, and frontline groups could better prepare for disaster response together. Spoke on frontline self-organizing, distrust of government and military, and ways to interface between the groups for everyone’s benefit. Cautioned against scraping data from social media and instead suggested having a way for civilians to feed aggregated data consensually into response agencies. In addition, led breakout groups and created visual notes from the overall workshop. The visuals are now the cover of the publication put out for the event.
