Codesign Studio

September 2013 – May 2014
Cambridge, MA

MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) is a private polytechnic research facility. The MIT Media Lab is an interdisciplinary research lab that encourages the unconventional mixing and matching of seemingly disparate research areas.

The Civic Media: Collaborative Design Studio, based at MIT and working in collaboration with partners in multiple locations, generates civic media projects that are grounded in real-world community needs. We partner with community-based organizations, and use co-design and lean startup methods for project ideation, design, prototyping, testing, launch, and stewardship.

Role

Formed and maintained relationships with community partners from which to effectively involve students, designed and led workshops, documented progress for improvement and feedback. In Fall of 2013, worked with 17 students to codesign projects for Zumix, Urbano Project, City Life/Vida Urbana, Studio Rev and the Brazilian Immigrant Center. In Spring of 2014, worked with 22 students to produce countersurveillance projects for the ACLU Mass and Guardian Project, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Citizens United for Rehabilitation of Errants, Transition House and Tor Project, Urban Youth Collaborative, The Social Movements Oral History Tour, and the Detention Watch Network. Over this time, worked with the lead of the Codesign Studio and other Teaching Assistants to design and populate content for the Codesign Toolkit.
